How did the Rainbow Card start? Tennis superstar and gay human rights pioneer, Martina Navratilova was so inspired by the incredible strength and solidarity that she witnessed during her participation at the 1993 March on Washington that she felt the need to do more. She realized that the only way to create change and make a difference was to harness the economic power of the LGBT community and thus, two years later, she helped to launch the Rainbow Card credit card program. The Rainbow Card became a unique fund raising tool supporting the funding abilities of the Rainbow Endowment that exclusively supports organizations and programs benefiting and protecting the LGBT causes.
Now through the simple act of using a credit card, people can have a direct impact towards helping the LGBT community...at no additional cost to themselves!
What is the Rainbow Endowment? With less than 2% of all philanthropic dollars in the United States targeted specifically to the LGBT causes, the Rainbow Endowment has established itself as one of the nation's top funding sources to the LGBT community. Since its inception in 1996, the Rainbow Endowment has contributed more than $2 million dollars towards over 80 organizations and programs heroically serving and empowering our community in areas ranging from HIV/AIDS and breast cancer research and services to protecting civil rights of gays and lesbians to school violence to gay arts and cultural projects.
